I was surfing the horse and hound forum the other day, and saw a picture of a nice horse that caught my eye. Without really thinking about what i was saying i said out loud “i love horses” it wasn’t even a showy horse, it was someone’s pet pony but there was something in the picture that made me melt a little. it’s hard for me to say things like that, it’s just not in my nature to be all lovey dovey, the only person on this world who i cant cuddle enough is my son Horatio, luckily hubby understands me, i think I’ve mentioned before how well he knows.
I was thinking today would be a good day, to try and pinpoint when my love of horses started. I use to just love anything that had a horse theme, films, TV shows, even westerns. One of the saddest films i saw was about pit ponies. It was called ‘the littlest horse thieves’. Other than TV influences my Nan use to tell me stories of her riding adventures and my aunt was also into horses with my cousin’s. My parents really weren’t that into them there was a period when they both had a horse; i think it was just a gap for my dad’s adrenaline boosts.
I think for me the true love started with unicorns, i was obsessed with Uni from the dungeons and dragons cartoons.
Around this time i watched a film with a unicorn called unico… i loved that film it left such a lasting image on my mind. I then spent the next 15years trying to find it. Even with the help of the www, it was a challenge. I found it in the end though.
Growing up i had toys such as ‘My Little Ponies’.
I spent more time playing with my Sindy horse than i did playing with Sindy.
when i finally got to the real thing, it was so amazing and never a disappointment, sure I’ve fallen of loads, sure the mucking out can become a drag, the missing out of school discos because i had to do my horse, spending my entire summers down the yard with just my pony… now its new downsides the stress of owning an animal that needs daily care and a constant worry that you are doing right by them…. believe me at the end of day when i look at Nas it’s all worth it.
If this is how i feel without riding him, i can’t wait until i am.
Horses have been a part of my life, since i was a little girl. i had a period when i had little to do with them. i hope that never happens again.
Happy Valentines…. to all the horses out there. I love you.
