To me are two words that should never be in the same sentence. In fact it was this title that actually deterred me from watching any of those generic medical awareness type shows.
Now supersize super skinny I liked -initially- although I always felt that Dr Christian Jessen had more empathy towards the skinny than the supersize. I did reason this by thinking well I’m fat so I will be more sensitive to the supersizeer. And besides I quite liked watching Dr Christian.
However his most recent series I did find hard to watch, it was more obvious they were having more of a pop at the supersizer. Not only did they have to deal with the significant decrease in food, and the shock wake up therapy they like to employ. They also had the skinny giving them a hard time about the quantities they would normally eat.
Sure I had seen it reversed when an older wiser supersizer was giving the skinny a hard time, but it wasn’t derogatory or intended to make the person disgusted at themselves. I really had the urge to slap the condescending lil skinny for the way she was talking to an obviously already deeply depressed person. Seriously who do these people think they are?
It comes across to me that, if you can fit in off the rack clothes then you feel you automatically get to the top of the pecking order! Seriously that is how it is there are some self-righteous people out there who think it is their right to belittle you, all under the umbrella of “helping you”
I feel that his latest show Embarrassing Fat Bodies Dr Christian is heading down this dark path also. There is no denying that the show does some good in educating people what is out there – there was a girl who lost weight which supposedly cleared up her Hirsutism, now I suffer with this badly and it has got worse over the years as I have put on weight. But I haven’t noticed it decrease as I’ve lost weight; let’s just say I have my doubts if it was all down to weight loss.
So I happened across some rather mean and pointless tweets at Dr Christian, which although I don’t fully agree with his shows I thought it was unfair of people to start on him in this manner. And to try and understand why I watched the show, yep all four episodes.
Three of them back to back last night no less, all I can say is boy do I wish he was my Doctor, then some of the supposedly 4.5billion spent on obese patients would actually come my way. Not only do I not get any help from my doctors for my issues I even have to pay above the going rate for the cream that works on making the hairs on my face appear less.
I have been back to my doctors over the years for different things, I would say excluding birth control. About ten times in total, and every time I was offered the latest diet pill and a sheet from the dietician (because to actually get to see a dietician takes about 6weeks). To be honest I don’t really need a dietician to lose weight.
I did find the show to be cringe worthy and a bit too explicit for my liking, and there would have been no way Steve would have watched it. There were some extreme cases that in all honesty should not have been left in the state that they were if people can get breast reductions on the NHS then why the hell was that poor man left with a stomach that reached his knees.
To me I didn’t think they were having a dig at the fat people as much as I thought they would and the emphasis was on them getting a better quality of life. I won’t deny I haven’t thought about the implications of losing weight and all that loose baggy skin, there is no way I could afford surgery. And if I could I would have had some kind of bariatric surgery that is before I realised I don’t need it.
And it’s a good thing really otherwise I would just be on some list somewhere, waiting for a consultation only to be told I need to lose weight before I can have the operation. I understand the medical implications of such a procedure, but still if I could lose weight I wouldn’t be asking for surgery.
The one thing I don’t like is when they try to tell you how and when to eat, I swear for me it’s the trying to follow someone else’s idea of what and when I should eat for the past 20 years is the reason I am still obese.
The other main factor for me eating is out of boredom or even avoidance, which then becomes a habit that is very hard to break. And the only reason I ate out of boredom is because I couldn’t afford to do things – hmm hang on no that’s not it the reality was at points in my life I couldn’t actually afford to have a life – .
I know we all moan about the cost of food, it is still relatively cheap compared to most hobbies. Some would also say you can always save up! But really when you’re low and depressed about it all, how many of us don’t put a little something extra in the trolley as a treat.
I’m glad those that went on the show got the help they needed to make changes. However the show isn’t really helping the obesity epidemic that is in our country, I wish I knew what would. For me last year just making more steps in the day and deciding when I would prefer to eat my calories (i dont actually count calories at all anymore, it was just the easiest way to explain what i meant) is what worked for me. Others might be the opposite and prefer to do very little and cut their calories intake right down.
Am I the only one shocked to hear that one of the three people who were doing the trials, was sedentary for 47mins (I think that’s right) out of every hour!!! That’s a whooping 13mins of activity I’m going to hazard a guess that was just trips to the bathroom, I suspect his mum cooked his meals.
Just from that data alone I would say his sedentary lifestyle is what needs to be changed. But how? Join a group when your self-esteem is already low. There are two ways people deal with this on the defence or offence; both are a barrier to protect ourselves from that ambush of media expectations.
Hell we are living in a world where they think it is ok to fat bash a pop star who no matter how amazing their voice or song writing, and the fact millions buy there albums. They still think it ok to try and embarrass and belittle them, Why?
I’m not saying it is ok to be morbidly obese at all, what i am saying is we all deserve to be happy. And then hopefully the changes to lose weight will come easier.
